SureCookie Shortcodes Reference
A shortcode is a tag in square brackets that WordPress swaps for live content when the page loads. SureCookie ships 23 built-in shortcodes for a Cookie Preferences link, your cookie tables, privacy policy sections, business details and a data request form.
All are free except the data request form, which needs SureCookie Pro.
Tip: Copy each tag from its admin screen instead of typing it. One wrong character and WordPress prints the tag as plain text. If a tag shows as text or the re-consent link does nothing, see Troubleshooting at the end of this page.
Where to Copy Each Shortcode
| Shortcodes | Count | Tier | Copy From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-consent link | 1 | Free | SureCookie → Settings → Banner → Re-Consent, Shortcode tab |
| Cookie policy content | 1 | Free | SureCookie → Compliance → Legal Pages → Cookie Policy, Shortcode tab |
| Privacy policy sections | 11 | Free | SureCookie → Compliance → Legal Pages → Privacy Policy, Shortcodes tab |
| Business details | 9 | Free | SureCookie → Compliance → Business Details, Shortcodes tab |
| Data request form | 1 | Pro | SureCookie → Settings → Advanced → Data Requests, under Form shortcode (shown once Enable Data Requests is on) |
Re-Consent Link
[surecookie_reconsent_button]
Outputs a Cookie Preferences link that opens the preferences modal, so visitors can review or withdraw consent. Put it in your footer, a sidebar or your privacy policy.
| Attribute | Default | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
label | Your Button Label setting (Cookie Preferences) | The link text. |
class | None | Extra CSS classes for the link, separated by spaces. |
Example:
[surecookie_reconsent_button label="Manage Cookies" class="footer-link"]
Button Label is translated through WPML or Polylang string translation, while label text shows exactly as typed. See Banner Text in the Wrong Language (WPML, Polylang, and Locales). Keep Button Label filled in, or set label, so the link always has text. Every link carries the surecookie-reconsent-btn class for custom CSS.
Note: On an opt-out consent model, clicking the link reopens the banner instead of the preferences modal, as long as the banner is on. With the banner off, it opens the preferences modal. See Consent Models Explained (Opt-in vs Opt-out).
For the menu link and the other re-consent options, see Re-Consent. To turn your own button into a trigger, see Frontend JavaScript API & Events (surecookieManager).
Cookie Policy Content
[surecookie_cookie_policy_content]
Outputs a table of contents, one table per cookie category, then a Last updated line. Categories with no cookies are left out. The generated Cookie Policy page already contains it. Add it by hand to show the tables inside another page, such as a policy you already have.
| Attribute | Default | What It Does |
|---|---|---|
show_timestamp | true | Shows the Last updated line below the tables. Set it to false to hide the line. |
Example:
[surecookie_cookie_policy_content show_timestamp="false"]
The date is the later of the page’s last edit and your latest scan. See Generating a Cookie Policy Page.
Privacy Policy Sections
The generated privacy policy is built from 11 shortcodes, one per section. Use them to reorder the page or add sections to a policy you wrote yourself. Each reads your current settings when the page is built. On a cached page, clear your page cache after a scan or a cookie or category change. See Compatibility: Caching Plugins & Page Builders.
| Shortcode | What It Outputs |
|---|---|
surecookie_privacy_last_updated | Two dates: when the page was last edited, and when the cookie list was last refreshed. |
surecookie_privacy_identity | Your legal entity name and registered address. |
surecookie_privacy_contact | Your privacy contact email, as a link. |
surecookie_privacy_cookie_summary | Your cookie categories, plus a link to your Cookie Policy page or the full cookie table. |
surecookie_privacy_consent_records | What is stored when a visitor answers the banner, how long it is kept, and any country lookup. |
surecookie_privacy_third_parties | Third-party services your pages load, taken from your latest scan. |
surecookie_privacy_server_egress | What your own server sends to other services, which browser settings cannot block. |
surecookie_privacy_data_transfers | Where information is processed. Renders nothing until you fill in Data Transfer Safeguards, which appears in Business Details once GDPR or UK GDPR is selected under Applicable Privacy Regimes. |
surecookie_privacy_regional | Whether your cookie rules differ by visitor location. |
surecookie_privacy_rights | Visitors’ privacy rights, and how to use them on your site. |
surecookie_privacy_jurisdiction | The rights section for one privacy law. Needs the code attribute. |
Attributes
Two of these shortcodes accept an attribute. The other nine take none.
mode(cookie summary) – Defaults toauto, which links to your Cookie Policy page when one is set, and shows the full cookie table when none is.tablealways shows the full table.summarynever shows the table, only the link when a Cookie Policy page is set.code(jurisdiction) – Required. It picks the privacy law from the table below. The section appears only while that law is selected under Applicable Privacy Regimes in Business Details. Without a valid code, it renders nothing.
| Code | Privacy Regime |
|---|---|
gdpr | GDPR (European Economic Area) |
uk_gdpr | UK GDPR |
cpra | CCPA / CPRA (California) |
dpdp | DPDP Act (India) |
coppa | COPPA (children, United States) |
Example:
[surecookie_privacy_jurisdiction code="uk_gdpr"]
A section missing a detail shows visitors a short sentence saying so, and logged-in administrators also see where to fix it. The regional section says rules differ by country only when SureCookie Pro is active and Geographic Rules is set to Show only where required by law. Otherwise it says every visitor is treated the same.
For how the generated page uses these sections, see Generating a Privacy Policy Page.
Business Details
Each of these 9 shortcodes prints one saved detail, so a policy you wrote yourself stays in step with Business Details. None of them take attributes.
| Shortcode | Outputs |
|---|---|
surecookie_company_name | Legal entity name |
surecookie_contact_email | Privacy contact email |
surecookie_address | Postal address, with the postal code and country on the last line |
surecookie_postal_code | Postal code |
surecookie_country | Country name |
surecookie_grievance_officer | Grievance officer name (the field appears once DPDP Act (India) is selected) |
surecookie_grievance_email | Grievance officer email (same condition) |
surecookie_cookie_policy_url | Web address (URL) of your Cookie Policy page |
surecookie_privacy_policy_url | Web address (URL) of your Privacy Policy page |
An empty detail prints nothing for visitors. Logged-in administrators see a small marker naming the missing detail instead. See Setting Up Your Business Details.
Data Request Form
[surecookie_data_request]
A SureCookie Pro shortcode with no attributes. It outputs the form visitors use to send a privacy request, such as asking for a copy, correction or deletion of their data. It renders nothing while Enable Data Requests is off or no Allowed Request Types are selected, and appears once per page even when Auto-add to Privacy Policy page also adds it. See Handling Data Requests.
Troubleshooting
- The tag prints as plain text – SureCookie is not active, the tag is misspelled, or it is
on a site without SureCookie Pro. Copy the tag again from its screen. Also check that the area runs shortcodes. Page and post content does, but a hand-written excerpt does not. - The re-consent link is missing for some visitors – SureCookie Pro leaves the link out wherever a Geographic Rule or a Visibility setting hides the banner for that visitor. With SureCookie → Tracking Manager → Geographic Rules set to Show only where required by law, that means a rule with Show Consent Banner off, a country no enabled rule covers, or an undetected location with the fallback Do not show banner. Pages excluded under SureCookie → Settings → Banner → Visibility hide it too. On a cached page the link can still show, but it does nothing for those visitors. See Where Banner and Widget Settings Live, and Which One Wins.
- The re-consent link does nothing with the banner switched off – With Enable Cookie Banner off, SureCookie loads its script on a page only when the shortcode sits in that page’s or post’s content. It loads it on every page while a menu is picked under Menu Level, or while Enable Floating Widget (SureCookie Pro) is on, even though the widget itself stays hidden while the banner is off. A link in a widget, template part or page builder module needs one of those two. Block themes usually have no classic menus to pick, so on a block theme turn the banner back on, turn on the floating widget, or place the shortcode in a page’s content. See How to Configure the Floating Widget.
- The cookie policy shortcode shows nothing – No cookie category has a cookie in it yet. The shortcode works on any page, whether or not you generated a Cookie Policy page. Run a scan or add a cookie by hand, clear your page cache, then reload the page. See Cookie Scanner and Cookie Manager: Add, Edit, and Manage Cookies.
- The Re-Consent screen shows “No re-consent method active” – The notice checks only Menu Level and the floating widget (SureCookie Pro), not your pages. Ignore it once the shortcode is placed.
Next Steps
Fill in Setting Up Your Business Details so the policy shortcodes have something to print, then place the re-consent link where visitors can find it.
